Routine Checkups for your Cat or Dog

Bringing your pet in for an annual examination provides us with the opportunity to discover and treat any emerging issues before they develop into serious problems. 

Every checkup appointment at our Flat Rock clinic includes a complete physical exam, routine vaccinations, and blood and urine screening to ensure your pet remains in excellent health. During these visits, we can also discuss your pet's diet and offer nutritional advice as needed.

What to Expect During an Exam

Your vet will check your pet's physical condition to determine their overall health.

This includes the following areas:

• General Condition

  General behavior and body condition are two of the first indicators we observe. How they stand and walk, whether they are bright and alert, and whether they are at appropriate body weight will be taken into account.

• Skin & Coat

  We will inspect your cat's or dog's skin and coat for dermatological issues, including dryness or oiliness, excessive shedding or hair loss, lumps and bumps, and dandruff.

• Head Region

  Your vet will inspect your pet's eyes, ears, and nose for any signs of growths, abnormalities, or discharge.

  They will examine their mouth to determine if there are any oral health issues, such as plaque buildup or gum disease.

• Internal Health

  Your pet's heart and pulse will be evaluated to identify any abnormalities in heart rate, rhythm, or blood pressure. Listening to their lungs helps detect any abnormal breathing that may be of concern. 

  Our vets will palpate the lymph nodes to find swelling or pain, as well as the abdomen area to look for aberrations of the bladder, liver, kidneys, stomach, and intestines. We also determine any discomfort this examination may cause.

• Nutritional Consulting

  Your vet may also review your pet's current diet and make dietary suggestions based on your dog's or cat's weight, and any behavioral concerns or skin conditions they may have.

Age-Related Pet Care

Your pet will be checked head to tail during their routine examinations, but the exam may also include other components if your pet is a kitten or puppy, or a dog or cat in their senior years.

Puppies & Kittens

Kittens and puppies need extra attention and care in their first year to get them off to a good start! Around 6 weeks of age, they will need vaccinations, medicines, and tests. 

Your new arrival will require a thorough physical examination, get their first immunizations, be tested for intestinal parasites, and be provided with deworming medication. We will give you information about the best ways to care for your new puppy or kitten, and provide you with a sample kit and other educational material so you are ready to take proper care of your new fur baby. 

Please be sure to ask any questions you have about caring for your new kitten or puppy. We'll see you for additional visits to finish the vaccination series. 

Seniors

Due to medical advances, better nutrition, and newer therapies, senior pets are now living longer. Regular examinations are critical to the health of our aging friends.
