Ted H. Owen, DVM
Chief of Emergency and Critical Care
Dr. Owen received his DVM in 1987 from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. He has nearly three decades of emergency, critical care and surgical and general practice in Western Carolina, including six years in Madison County, where he owned a large and small animal clinic. Prior to his tenure in WNC, he was an emergency veterinarian in Greenville and Spartanburg, SC. During that time he also taught biology and anatomy as an adjunct instructor at Spartanburg Community College.
He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society.
During his off hours, Dr. Owen plays fiddle and guitar in the contra dance band “Local Produce,” pursues an avid interest in Appalachian fiddle music, and is a whitewater kayaking enthusiast. Ted and his wife, Lyn, also enjoy doing Endurance Races on their pinto Arabians and pleasure riding and camping all over the United States. They live in Hendersonville, NC.
Bill Gibson, DVM
Dr. Bill Gibson is a 1989 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. He has over 27 years of experience in general medical, surgical, and emergency practice. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, has served as an Adjunct Instructor in the Tri-County Technical College Veterinary Technology program, and is a former president of the Blue Ridge Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Brandon Hughes, DVM
Dr. Hughes is from Louisville, Kentucky, where his family encouraged his early interest in caring for animals. He began his undergraduate work majoring in biology at Colorado Mountain College but when his parents moved back to their small farming town in the Mississippi Delta, he decided to join them and transfer to Delta State University.
While in Mississippi he worked with local veterinarians in many different aspects of veterinary medicine and was subsequently accepted to the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduating in 2008, Dr. Hughes completed a Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship at Mississippi State; since completing his internship he has worked in private practice as an emergency/critical care veterinarian.
After visiting several times, Dr. Hughes and his wife, Emily, fell in love with Western North Carolina and moved here in 2011. They share their home with three dogs, six cats and a pig named Ruby, and look forward to expanding their ties in the community and exploring the area’s many natural wonders.
Dr. Jenny Gibson, DVM
Dr. Jenny Gibson moved to Western North Carolina from her native state of Florida in 2007. She is a 1996 graduate of Louisiana State University. Since graduation, she has worked in small animal private practice. Her special interests include critical care and internal medicine. Dr. Gibson and her husband share their Waynesville home with 1 dog and their 3 cats. Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Gibson enjoys reading, gardening, and exploring this beautiful region of Western North Carolina.
Dr. Natalie Morris, DVM
Dr. Natalie Morris is a native of the Asheville area and graduated from UNC Asheville with a Bachelor of Science in 2005. She earned her doctorate of veterinary medicine in 2011 from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She lived in Fayetteville area for 3 years after graduating from veterinary school, and when the time came for a location change, she couldn’t wait to get back to the mountains. She joined the WCRAH & VEH tea in November 2014 and is very excited to work alongside the wonderful staff and doctors. She has special interests in horseback riding, especially with the North American Trail Ride Conference (N. A. T. R.C), hiking, camping and dancing. Dr. Morris currently owns 3 dogs (Wembley, Sheba, and Zelda), 2 cats (Poppy and Nicki), 2 ferrets (Mister and Kruger) and a horse (Barley).
Dr. Haley Bates, DVM
Growing up in Findlay, Ohio, Dr. Haley Bates was always bringing home stray cats, dogs and rabbits. Her parents never discouraged her, and she couldn’t help but fall in love with animal care from an young age. Dr. Bates headed to the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, where she obtained her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. She preformed her clinical year at the University of Florida and decided to remain in the state after graduating. She worked at a rapidly growing private practice, Morningside Animal Hospital.
Dr. Bates brings with her, special interest in soft tissue surgery and dentistry because of their capability to greatly enhance a pet’s quality of life. On a personal level, Dr. Bates strongly believes in creating and maintaining an open, honest, and relaxed relationship with her clients. She states “Being able to socialize with my clients allows me to educate them in a relaxed manner about their pet’s healthcare”.
At home, Dr. Bates has one cat: Oliver, who was acquired on the island of St. Kitts. She also has a French Bulldog named Indy. When not caring for pets’ needs around the hospital or spending time with Oliver and Indy, Dr. Bates enjoys hiking, kayaking, biking, running and reading. She’s a self-described adrenaline junkie, and loves anything that can make her heart pound.
Candy is a native of Western Carolina and has worked in veterinary hospitals on and off for 4 years. She has also worked for kennels, pet groomers and horse farms in the area. When not working at WCRAH-VEH she is spending time with her boyfriend Perry, out hiking with her two dogs or horseback riding. She also owns a parrot, two horses and one donkey.
A Henderson County native for 23 years, Katie has been around animals all of her life and enjoys working with them. She is currently enrolled in the AB Tech Veterinary Medical Technology program to become a registered veterinary technician. In her spare time she enjoys being outdoors with her two dogs, Ace and Thor. Katie also has two cats, Gandolf and Frankie and a Bearded Dragon named Izzy that she also enjoys spending time with.
Jessica is originally from Morehead City, NC and relocated to the Western North Carolina area. She completed her Veterinary Assistant Certification in May 2015 at the top of her class. She plans to further her educations and veterinary career through AB-Tech, obtaining her Veterinary Medical Technology degree. Her interests in veterinary medicine include nursing and critical care, large and small animal medicine and internal medicine. At home Jessica has two dogs, two cats, one turtle and a hamster. In her spare time she enjoys offshore fishing, hunting ans spending time with her family, friends and loving pets.
Hannah is a early college graduate, who did a semester internship at an animal clinic. She is currently enrolled at AB Tech to become a Registered Veterinary Techinican. She owns a sugar glider named Fay and two praire dogs named Peach and Mocha. In her spare time she enjoys playing video games, walking, and spending time with her loved ones.
Cherie is currently enrolled in AB Tech’s Veterinary Medical Technology program. She has always been a huge animal lover and is following her passion to become a Registered Veterinary Technician. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her fiance, family and her fur babies. Cherie also enjoys hiking, reading and writing poetry.
Kirsten is a life-long animal lover who grew up in Durham NC. She moved to the mountains when she started attending Warren Wilson College. She graduated in December of 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology. Since she was little she has worked with and cared for animals of all sorts and is very excited to be working in a veterinary clinic once again. Her hobbies include gardening, crafting, horseback riding, body boarding and doing anything outdoors.
Shawna joined our practice in May 2009 with over 20 years of experience working with animals. Her experience includes veterinary assistance, obedience training, boarding kennel management, and therapeutic riding. She grew up helping raise, train and show registered Schipperkes for her family’s Topwatch Kennel. She holds a BA degree in Biology from Maryville College in Tennessee. Shawna enjoys photography, hiking, Native American history/art and sharing her life with her horse Kiwani, dog Rosie Ann, and two cats, Zuni and Hawkeye.
Michelle grew up in South Carolina and graduated in 1998 from the College of Charleston. She has worked in emergency veterinary medicine in South Carolina and North Carolina since 2001. When Michelle is not at our hospital, she works as a traffic manager in Spartanburg, SC. In her time off Michelle enjoys reading, going to the movies with friends and hiking. She has one dog Yogi, and two cats, Buttercup and Nemo.
Jana was born on Santa Catalina Island off the coast of California, where her parents trained horses. She moved to the Carolina’s 15 years ago. Jana has worked in the veterinary field for over 20 years. She lives with her two English Pointers, two horses, cats, chickens and whatever else wanders onto her Tryon farm. Jana is a field master with the Green Creek Hounds and is involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Kim joined WCRAH &VEH in May 2014, after moving to Western North Carolina. A native of NW Pennsylvania she moved to Greensboro, NC after finishing her B.S. in Biology from Westminster College. Kim worked for seven years there as a zookeeper and educator with a variety of domestic and exotic animals, including maned wolves, tigers, wallabies, anteaters, parrots, primates, small native animals, meerkats and a few reptiles. Along with helping maintain the animal’s health, she also worked to educate visitors, mentored interns and volunteers. During her time in Greensboro, she organized and facilitated and international conference for primate care and conservation. Kim also has experience working in boarding kennels and doggie daycare facilities.
Kim lives with a small zoo of her own: 4 dogs, 6 cats, 2 rats and a small snake. Kim enjoys music, as hobby- musician and a listener, and hiking/outdoor activities. Kim volunteers at the WNC Nature Center in Asheville to continue her passion in natural science education. She says that she enjoys working in Client Service and is proud to be a part of such a compassionate team.
Wendy’s love for animals is what brought her to WCRAH & VEH in July 2014. In working here she has found her niche among her like-minded co-workers. In her spare time she enjoys writing, crocheting, and photography. You can also find Wendy hiking the trails in area with her two rescue dogs, Nougat and Daze.
Courtney was born and raised in Hendersonville, NC. She graduated from Henderson County Early College with her Associates in Arts in May 2015. Her love for animals is what brought her to WCRAH & VEH. In her free time, Courtney enjoys working out, cooking and hiking throughout Western North Carolina. At home she has two sweet fur babies, a tabby cat named Bubba and a Husky named Zoe.

Pam was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida and joined our staff in the fall of 2016. She lived for a while in South Georgia before moving to Hendersonville in 1995. She has always had either a dog or cat as a companion and can’t imagine her life without their love. Pam and her husband currently have four dogs and enjoy their “fur babies” and taking them on walks daily. Pam enjoys any water sport, reading and relaxing on their deck with a fire in the evening.

Tanya Hagins brings 21 years of experience to our hospital, along with a big smile and an always helpful attitude. She’s a North Carolina Registered Veterinary Technician, having graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College Veterinary Technician Program. Tanya works the day shift, nurturing our patients and tending to daily appointments. She has a passion for dentistry and has pursued continuing education to develop specialized skills in this area. Off duty, Tanya and her husband Tom spend time with their daughter, Chayse and pets Sarah, their 3 legged St. Bernard and 2 cats.

Originally from New Jersey, Larisa moved to North Carolina in 2006 to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Larisa is a graduate from Asheville – Buncombe Technical Community College and has an associates degree in Veterinary Medical Technology. After falling in love with WNC and meeting her husband, John, she decided to stay in North Carolina and make it her permenant home. She is licensed by the state of North Carolina as a registered veterinary technician. She joined the WCRAH & VEH team in 2010, considering our team, clients and their pets a part of her extended family. She works both day practice and emergency practice. She is the mother of 2 young boys, Tristan and Tanner. She has 3 dogs, 2 chihuahuas, Casy and Topo and a Labrador Retriever, Lexie and 2 cats Jimmine and Charlotte.

Jordan was born and raised in Western North Carolina. From a young age she had a compassion and love for animals and knew she would work in veterinary medicine. She began her career at WCRAH-VEH in 2010 after completing the veterinary medical technology program at AB Tech. As of 2011 she became a Registered Veterinary Technician. She enjoys the compassionate, hardworking team atmosphere at WCRAH-VEH. She enjoys sports, shopping, and spending time with family and friends.
Jordan shares her home with her husband Ryan, their daughter Oaklyn and a sweet and precious Pomeranian named Baby and their bouncing boxer mix Anny.

Melissa moved to Western Carolina from New Jersey so she could attend the AB Tech Veterinary Technology program. From a young age, Melissa has wanted to work with animals and what better way to do so by helping heal sick and injured animals. She graduated in August of 2014 and became a Registered Veterinary Technician in October 2014. She joined WCRAH & VEH in the summer of 2014. Melissa has 1 cat named PopTart and enjoys rock climbing, hiking and traveling in her spare time.

Jacque grew up in the Carolina Foothills trail riding with her Rocky Mountain horse Dusty. She has been working with animals since she was 15 by volunteering at the local humane society and as a foster mom for kittens. She graduating in 2009 from AB Tech with an Associates in Veterinary Technology and became a Registered Veterinary Technician in 2015. Jacque joined WCRAH & VEH in February 2015 and has enjoyed her time here. Prior to joining our staff she had worked in equine emergency and surgical medicine right after graduating from AB Tech. In her spare time, Jacque enjoys riding horses, reading books, and coming home to her wonderful boyfriend Cameron and their two sweet cats; Theodore and Penelope.

Caroline joined the WCRAH & VEH team in the fall of 2015 after graduating from AB Tech with an associate degree in Veterinary Medical Technology and obtaining her RVT. She is originally from Louisiana but lived in South Carolina and Florida before moving to Western North Carolina. Caroline had been a newspaper reported for 10 years before deciding to go back to school to become a veterinary nurse. She is excited to start her career with WCRAH & VEH and enjoys being able to work in the day practice and emergency. In her spare time, Caroline enjoys reading, hiking, photography, writing and spending time with her favorite people and her dog Oz, cat Slinky, 2 rats Chicken and Waffles.

Nikki has been working in the veterinary field since 2011 and is a graduate from AB Tech in Veterinary Technology. She joined WCRAH & VEH team in the fall of 2014. Nikki enjoys spending her free time with her husband, 2 cats and 2 dogs. She also enjoys working in the yard, watching football, and spending time with her friends.

Tanya Petty’s earliest childhood memories revolved around her passion for working with animals. She grew up in Okinawa, Japan and later moved to a beautiful horse farm in Tennessee. In 2011, she graduated from Columbia State Community College with her A.S. degree in Veterinary Medical Technology and began her career as a Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician in Chattanooga, TN. Tanya recently joined WCRAH-VEH and is excited to be here while working towards her North Carolina Registered Veterinary Technicians license. Tanya currently resides in Fletcher, NC with her husband, Collin, and sweet kitty, Baby Gray.

Beth began working in veterinary medicine after graduating from AB Tech’s Veterinary Technology program in 2006. She joined WCRAH September of 2016.
On top of being an RVT, she is also a CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician). And she is currently pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Beth lives in Hendersonville with her husband, James, and daughters, Adeline and Lorelei. Together they have five dogs (Pax, Winnie, Mya, Gibbs and Patches), one cat (Ruby), and a poisonous dart frog (Ribbit). In her spare time she is kept very busy with homework and coaching her daughter’s cheer squad, as well as being on the board for the North Carolina Association of Veterinary Technicians, but she most cherish spending time with my family and fleeting moments of pleasure reading.

Lindsey grew up in Hendersonville area and in Florida. After graduating from Hendersonville High School, Lindsey moved back to Miami to work on a degree in music performance playing the flute.
She began her career working as a veterinary nurse in 2003, and worked for several veterinary clinics in Tennessee and Western North Carolina before joining WCRAH-VEH in 2011.
Lindsey lives in Penrose with her “mini me” Ramey and their adopted pets, a mini Beagle named Rose, tabby cat Hoodiddle, calico cat named Nixie and Eva the 3 legged kitty. Lindsey also enjoys spending time outdoors hiking in DuPont Forest, singing on the Praise Team at church and spending time with her family.
Chelsie grew up on the eastern plains of Colorado, graduating from Lincoln High School in 2002. In 2004, she moved to Florida, where she began her career working in the veterinary field. Chelsie joined WCRAH & VEH in June of 2012 bringing her experience in both family and emergency veterinary practices.
She has a wonderful boyfriend and two amazing girls as well as two dogs, a cat and a fish named Jack. In her free time, Chelsie loves hiking the many trails through Western North Carolina and reads lots of books.
Jennifer started in the veterinary field at age 14, working at a 24-hour veterinary emergency hospital. She has a BS in Animal Science from Virginia Tech and is currently working on obtaining her RVT. Jennifer has worked in a multitude of positions as a nurse including at a referral/emergency hospital, spay and neuter clinic and a regular day practice. When she is not at work, you may find her hiking with her two dogs, Rocko and Dublin, or lounging around with her cat, Terrapin. Since moving to Western Carolina, Jennifer finally feels at home.
Liz is originally from the Traveler’s Rest area and attended Greenville Technical College for nursing for 2.5 years before deciding she wanted to work in the veterinary field. Liz currently resides in Chesnee with her daughter Emma and their 3 dogs, 3 horses, 2 goats and 4 cats. She enjoys riding her horses in her free time and spending time with her family.
Sierra grew up in Kingsport, TN and has recently moved to Hendersonville, NC. She has worked in the Veterinary profession from the age 17.. She is a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University. She was honored with the “Most Outstanding Student” Award in 2014. She obtained her degree in Veterinary Medical Technology and has devoted her career to animal health and nursing care. Her favorite interests in veterinary medicine include: surgery, anesthesia and emergency medicine. Her hobbies include: hiking, distance running, outdoor activities of all kinds, singing and spending time with her precious dog Kira.
Josie is a Cuban native, raised in Miami until moving to NC 3 years ago. Began journey in 2009 as a receptionist, within a couple months realized her passion was in nursing and began training in Emergency. Moved here with her young daughter, Buddy the pitbull and two cats Peggy and Sadie. She Enjoy theater productions and visiting different historic sites and hiking trails.
Turner recently moved from Louisville, KY and has fallen in love with the mountains of NC. He achieved a BA in Music from Erskine College. Turner is excited to be working at WCRAH & VEH and looks forward to giving your furry companion the care they deserve (he’s admittedly partial to terriers).
Callie grew up in the WNC mountains and graduated from AB Tech with an associates in Veterinary Technology in 2016. She joined WCRAH shortly after. In her time off she enjoys staying active – hiking, camping, live music – but enjoys lounging at home with a comfy couch and a movie as well; life is about balance! Her pups Coyote and Harlowe are always up for an adventure with her. She also cohabitates with her felines, Gypsy and Roman.

Andy Pertuset, BS, CVPM
Andy began working in the veterinary industry at the age of 15. His first job was a kennel attendant; this is where he grew his love and passion for animals. After working five years in the kennel Andy took a position at a large veterinary specialty emergency hospital as an emergency triage nurse. Andy worked in the emergency department for six years while attending Winthrop University. During this time Andy worked as a triage nurse, overnight emergency technician and ICU technician. Upon completion of his business degree, he became the practice manager of small animal general practice. After three years in general practice, Andy knew his love lied in emergency veterinary medicine. Andy joined the WCRAH and VEH team in April 2015 and is the 2017 Pet Plan Practice Manager of the Year. Andy and his wife Sarah live in Hendersonville and have three furry babies; Annie, Baxley and Claire. In his free time, Andy loves spending time with family and friends. He also enjoys fishing and cheering on the Carolina Panthers!
Susan began working for her family veterinarian when she was in junior high school and continued working for veterinarians throughout college. She started working with Dr. Rosen more than 15 years ago and is now our Inventory Manager. Susan and her husband, Mark, enjoy the company of their 2 Boxers, a cat, three horses and, especially, their 2 grandchildren.
Marcia moved to Western North Carolina from Northern Virginia in 2008. She started working in the veterinary field shortly after moving to the Hendersonville area. Marcia has been in the customer service and finance fields for over 10+ years prior to switching careers. You will find Marcia helping troubleshoot computer issues around the hospital or working in the office as the assistant to the Hospital Administrator. She has five dogs: Max, Hailey, Dakota, Jasper and Grace. Marcia also enjoys scrapbooking, reading, football, camping, gardening and being outdoors.
