It can be difficult to know when a situation is truly a pet emergency. Trust your instincts and, if in doubt, call us at 828-697-7767. Following is a list of common emergencies that do need to be assessed by a veterinarian.
- Open mouth breathing in cats
- Difficulty breathing in dogs
- Sudden collapse, disorientation or extreme lethargy
- Bite wounds or puncture wounds
- Abscess
- Lacerations
- Hit by car
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea, especially bloody diarrhea
- Ingestion of any possible toxic substance, including:
- chocolate
- rat poison
- antifreeze
- snail bait
- mushrooms
- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- other human drugs
- Xylitol artificial sweetener
- Painful eye
- Severe lameness in any limb
- Fever above 103.0°
- Inability to urinate
- Inability to defecate
- Seizures
- Gunshot wound
- Difficulty standing or walking
- Choking or gagging
- Prolonged coughing
- Painful ears
- Any problem that is of concern to you
